How to Care for Your Eyes

Last updated 7 years ago

Eyesight is a key sense which we use every day. Eye care is an important part of staying healthy. Even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts, your eyes still need some tender love and care.

Use Protection

The first way to take care of your eyes is to ensure they’re always protected. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from UV rays, which are just as harmful to your eyes as they are to your skin. Try out transition lenses, which darken when exposed to UV rays, to keep your eyes safe.

Protective goggles shield your eyes from debris and toxic chemicals. This doesn’t just apply to welders or woodworkers—household chores like scrubbing the bathroom can be hazardous to the eyes. Be sure to utilize proper protection when near debris or when working with any type of chemical. These types of protective glasses can be purchased at your local eyeglass store.

Avoid Strain

Eyestrain is an issue that is often overlooked. Using computers, reading, and doing close work like sewing for extended periods of time can cause strain. Be sure to take frequent breaks, allowing your eyes to rest. While eyestrain doesn’t cause outright harm to the eyes, it is extremely uncomfortable!

Eat Right

Remember to eat your fruits and veggies. Proper nutrition is essential to eye health. Be sure you are getting plenty of Vitamin A, antioxidants, and minerals. All of these—found in foods like carrots, berries, and spinach—work to keep your vision strong.

Visit the Doctor

Regular check ups are extremely important to eye care. Be sure to visit your optometrist regularly. Also, be aware of your family’s history of eye issues, like cataracts and glaucoma, as there is a genetic factor related to these conditions. Knowing what you are at risk for is vital to early detection.

Protecting your eyes, eating well, and receiving annual exams are essential to maintaining ocular health. Do you have questions about your eye health? Conveniently located in Long Island, Wize Eyes is available for all your eye needs. Call us at (631) 351-4900 to ensure your peace of mind.
