Signs That You're Overdue for an Eye Exam

Last updated 6 years ago

Regular eye exams are an important part of any health routine, even if you have not needed vision correction in the past. As you get older, your vision can change and you may develop a need for eyeglasses or contacts. Eye exams are also important for the detection of common eye problems that may not immediately affect vision—catching these problems early is the best way to prevent or minimize long-term damage. Here are some indications that it is time for you to schedule an eye exam with your optometrist:

  • You have trouble reading. Having trouble focusing on text is a common problem among aging individuals, as the lens of the eye begins to lose flexibility with age. The eyes lose some ability to focus on close objects, making reading particularly difficult. You may only need reading glasses to correct this problem. If you also have other vision problems, then bifocal lenses may be more appropriate.
  • Your glasses or contacts are not offering complete vision correction. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you will probably need to periodically have your prescription updated. Vision is prone to change over time, which can be gradual. You may not immediately notice your vision changing, so eye exams are important for maintaining clear vision. Wearing lenses that are not the correct prescription for you could cause eye strain and headaches.
  • Light causes significant glare. If you notice glares or halos around lights, you may be developing a vision problem. In these cases, nighttime may be the worst time for your vision, as bright lights tend to cause the worst glare. This can be particularly problematic while driving. Your optometrist can offer solutions like anti-glare lenses for your glasses or appropriate treatment options.
