While you may focus on eating healthfully and exercising regularly, you might also neglect one of your most valuable assets: your eyesight. This is especially true if you work at a computer for a large part of the day. Though eye strain has not been found to cause permanent damage, it can cause headaches, blurry vision, difficulty focusing, and other avoidable symptoms, both in people with perfect vision and those with eyeglasses or contacts. Here are a few tips to help you avoid eye strain:
- Get a thorough eye exam. Every year, undergo a comprehensive eye exam to make sure that you’re taking care of any possible vision problems. During the exam, don’t forget to tell your eye doctor how much time you spend on the computer daily, both at work and at home.
- Take frequent breaks. Take “mini-breaks” often to rest your eyes. It helps to look away from the screen to something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds once every 20 minutes—doctors call this the 20-20-20 rule. There are even programs you can download that will shut your desktop off for a few minutes every hour.
- Adjust your monitor’s display settings. The brightness of your monitor should be about the same as the brightness of the room around you. Make sure you’re getting enough light—a bright screen in a darkened room is a common trigger of eye strain.
- Blink often. Blinking while working at a computer is very important for keeping your eyes moist and preventing irritation. People working at a computer tend to blink five times less than they normally would, so make a conscious effort to refresh your eyes!
