When was the last time you saw the eye doctor? Many people believe that only people who wear eyeglasses or contacts need to see the eye doctor, but nothing could be further from the truth. Eye health is as important as dental health and total body health and, as such, should be examined regularly.
Regular Check Ups
Just as everyone needs checkups from the doctor and the dentist, everyone needs regular checkups with the eye doctor. These screenings will determine if you have vision problems, need eyeglasses, or need to change some of your habits to protect your eyes. You and your family should have vision exams from an eye doctor at the following times:
- Children need exams at ages 6 months, 3 years, and 6 years, or prior to entering first grade.
- Adults need to visit the eye doctor every two years.
- Seniors over the age of sixty should see their eye doctor annually.
People with certain medical conditions should see their eye doctors more frequently. Disease or illness could cause vision problems that require eyeglasses. Some conditions can cause an increased risk of blindness because of medications or the condition itself. If you have diabetes, make an appointment with your eye doctor every year. Ask your eye doctor or general physician if you have another disease that requires more frequent exams.
Vision Problems or Symptoms
If you have problems with your vision, or if you have symptoms of changing or worsening sight, you need to see your eye doctor right away. These problems or symptoms may include blurry vision, sudden vision loss, eye pain, or a foreign body in the eye. If you wear contacts and you get something in your eye, remove the contacts and wear your eyeglasses until you see the doctor.
